Nova Scotia Health Authority pleased with first-ever Accreditation Canada results

HALIFAX, N.S. -- On Nov. 23, Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) received notice from Accreditation Canada that it has been Accredited with report.

As an organization, NSHA has succeeded in meeting the fundamental requirements of the accreditation program and overall met 92.9 per cent of Accreditation Canada criteria. This decision is the result of on-site visits in late October by a team of 30 surveyors who visited locations across the province.

“Given that this is the first time our province-wide health organization has been surveyed and accredited and our organization is only in its third year, we are very pleased with the decision,” said NSHA President and CEO Janet Knox. “We know we have additional work to do and we will use the recommendations provided by the surveyors to help move our quality improvement efforts forward.”

Accreditation with report means additional evidence and reports must be submitted to Accreditation Canada over the coming year in order to retain the decision. The areas of focus for those reports will include transfer of information between units and departments, client identification practices, medication reconciliation and use, falls and suicide prevention strategies, as well as patient flow.

The report notes a number of strengths observed by the surveyors, including the enormous progress achieved since NSHA began in April 2015. The team recognized the commitment of dedicated leaders, employees, physicians and volunteers across the entire organization and indicated there is a solid vision for the future of health and wellness in Nova Scotia.
